BIH Digital Health Accelerator Demo Day 2019

Seven innovation teams of Charité and MDC presented their digital health solutions at the BIH Digital Health Accelerator Demo Day on November 26th in front of over 200 guests from research and clinic, politics, industry, health insurance and venture capital.

The Digital Health Accelerator is a BIH funding program to support innovators from BIH, Charité and MDC in the development of digital health prototypes and products, and subsequently to accompany their translation to medical applications.

After a keynote speech by Dr. Axel Heitmüller, Managing Director, Imperial College Health Partners, UK, entitled “Innovating and Collaborating for a healthier Population”, the following seven teams out of Charité and MDC presented their projects and prototypes developed in the accelerator:

  • Prof. Prof. hc. Dr. Markus van der Giet, Charité: AKIcheck– Clinical Decision Support System to Identify Acute Kidney Injury
  • PD Dr. Olga Geisel, Charité: Open.IU– A Diagnosis and Therapy Solution for Adolescents with Internet Gaming Disorder
  • Dr. Altuna Akalin, MDC: ARCAS – A.I. to Enable Best Treatment Possible for Every Cancer Patient
  • Herlind Megges/Silka Dawn Freiesleben, Charité: siloa – Solution for Digital Early Detection of Alzheimer’s Disease
  • Dr. René Hägerling, Charité: 3DHistopath– Bringing Histopathology from 2D to 3D
  • Prof. Dr. Simone Spuler/Dr. Elisabetta Gazzerro, Charité/MDC: SUMUS– A Trustable Physiotherapy Guide for Patients Affected by Muscle Diseases
  • Prof. Dr. Stefan Verlohren, Charité: PreFree – A Decision Support and Home Monitoring Solution for Reducing Uncertainty in Pregnancy.

During the get-together, interested guests were able to talk directly to the innovation teams, experience and test their prototypes, and explore potential cooperation opportunities. Andrea Runow, BIH Chief Financial Officer (interim), said: “The example of the BIH Digital Health Accelerator shows that successful translation of biomedical research results and inventions from research to clinical practice requires interdisciplinary expertise and close collaboration. With the steadily increasing number of supported innovation teams, BIH is fulfilling its political mandate of translation, in particular also in the field of digital medicine. I am happy for the innovations teams and their achieved successes to date and look forward to seeing their future path.”

The call for applications for the next cohort of the BIH Digital Health Accelerator will follow in early spring 2020.
