The objective of the BIH DHA program at Charité is to support the development of digital health solutions, including medical products and health tech solutions. Apply to the BIH Digital Health Accelerator Program and make your digital health solution come to life. We will help you bring your idea directly into the healthcare system for the benefit of patients and society.

Who Can Apply?

All Charité employees (including BIH), from clinical, research, and administrative departments, independent of their specialties and positions, are eligible to apply. Please see below for a non-exhaustive list:

Also available for funding are projects in collaboration with, or jointly developed with, other research or clinical institutions. Registered companies are not eligible to apply.

DentalXr.ai drives the future of dentistry by providing AI-based detection and automated documentation of dental pathologies and restorations. The BIH DHA-supported Charité project spun off in 2020 and has since been adopted by dental professionals across Germany to save time and further improve patient communication.
X-cardiac is creating the next generation of digital biomarkers for the cardiac intensive care unit. The BIH DHA-supported Charité and DHZB/DHZC project developed an AI-based, CE-certified medical product targeting post-operative bleeding, a major cause of post-OP mortality. The project spun off in 2020 and is currently expanding its product portfolio.
AIgnostics is building AI-powered precision diagnostics for pathology. Started in the BIH DHA program in 2018, the Charité collaboration project with TU Berlin spun off in 2020 and is now pioneering computational pathology for pharmaceutical research, clinical trials, and CDx development.
Through the Accelerator Program of the Berlin Institute of Health, dentalXrai GmbH was spun off from Charité Universitätsmedizin Berlin in spring 2020. The company offers state-of-the-art AI-based tools for dental diagnostics and patient communication. dentalXrai’s software is certified as a medical device.

Phases

Program Structure

The BIH Digital Health Accelerator program is organized into two distinct stages.

Phase 1: Prototype

Funded teams develop prototypes (wireframe, proof-of-technology, proof-of-concept) based on their targeted medical needs and submitted concepts.

Demo Day

At the conclusion of the program, teams in phase 1 present their innovations on Demo Day to an interdisciplinary audience of investors, policy makers, and healthcare professionals.

Stage 2: Product

Teams selected for stage 2 further develop their digital health technologies and prepare for launch. The goal of this phase is to transfer prototypes into medical applications via e.g. licensing, industry collaboration, or spin-off company formation.

The BIH Digital Health Accelerator program is structured into two stages.

Step 1: Written Application

Step 2: Project Deep Dive with Interdisciplinary Experts

Late January 2025

Discussion (no slide presentation) with an interdisciplinary group of external experts on topics: Medical need, technology, evidence/data, and IP. At least one team member is required to participate.

Step 3: Pitch Day with External Selection Committee

Mid-February 2025

Selected projects will be invited to give a presentation to pitch their projects to a selection committee of external experts, followed by a Q&A. At least one team member is required to attend. Selection criteria include team, product and market (see FAQ).
