News: The Digital Health Accelerator Program of Berlin Health Innovations starts its second round

At the beginning of September, Berlin Health Innovations, the joint technology transfer of Berlin Institute of Health (BIH) and Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin, reopened its co-working space for innovative project teams from Charité and the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine in the Helmholtz Association. The Digital Health Accelerator Program supports six selected teams in transferring their digital health innovations into applications.

Following the successful pilot phase last year, the program is now entering its second round with twice as many teams. Over the next three months, six interdisciplinary teams will advance their concepts and prototypes in the following areas

  • Computer-based determination of the internal clock in chronomedicine
  • Diagnostic support through machine learning in the dental field
  • Diagnostic support through machine learning in histology
  • Digital Platform for Diagnosis and Therapy Planning in Cardiology
  • Digital platform for improved affordability of and access to health care in infrastructure-weak countries
  • Sensor-based care optimization after orthopedic surgery.

The Digital Health Accelerator program aims to transfer research results into medical applications that ultimately benefit patients. Last year, three teams developed digital solutions in the fields of image and big data analysis for personalized medicine, stroke prediction and early detection of incidents in the intensive care unit.

In the next three months, the six teams will be intensively supported in the co-working spaces of Berlin Health Innovations by experienced coaches and mentors in the areas of technology, medical product and business model development, law, regulatory affairs as well as industrial partner and capital acquisition. In addition, last year’s program graduates support the teams in passing on the experience they have gained in realizing medical innovations.

“With Berlin Health Innovations, we were able to strengthen the digital health community in Berlin,” says Dr. Rolf Zettl, Member of the BIH Executive Board and responsible for Berlin Health Innovations. “We focus now on the expansion of complementary programs and cooperation with industry and financial partners to build a strong and sustainable pipeline of innovations in the field of digital health for the benefit of patients and as a location factor, in addition to the consolidation and scaling of already successful activities.”
